Nick Weall club has replied to Andy Rodker clubAndy Rodker club has replied to Nick Weall clubI went exploring in the churchyard of Kingston Deverill once. I was looking for Ecgbright's Stone, (Egbert's Stone), where King Alfred secretly met the Hampshire levies before going on to defeat the Danes at the Battle of Ethandun. The theory is that the large stone here was once a capstone of a dolmen, originally on the top of the hill behind the village. As such it may have had significant meaning and would be well known to the locals but not perhaps to any recently arrived Northmen, so a good place for a secret meeting place in a secluded valley. Made sense to me when I saw it!

Nice rolling country! I am not sure, is that the remains of some hill carving on the right, or just co incidence?
Best wishes, and a good weekend.
Peter
