I'm pleased that you have enjoyed it!
There is a bit of context to this photo, in that I had just been to the lake ( www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/50886818 ) for the sunset, and then a walk round the field to the owl as part of a camera club outing, so what you can see is the last of the evening light.
As you quite rightly figured out, I did use a flash. The other settings were ISO 200, f 5.6 and 1/125 sec. (plus a white balance adjustment)
Strangely, the others I was with didn't seem interested in this owl.... Perhaps they were so happy to have seen the sunset!
