Sierra de La Cabrera and the Lozoya Valley

I could imagine the wind whistling across there.

Indeed, The Central Spanish plateau or Meseta is already high, before you get into the mountains, and also being centrally located within the peninsula means that it has a near-continental climate and it can feel very Siberian for much of the winter. (Madrid is the highest capital city in Europe but none of my Spanish students knows this fact!).
There is a saying about the weather in Madrid;
'9 meses de invierno, 3 meses de Infierno!'
(9 months of winter, 3 months of hell!).
In some years (this one for example), it's panning out just like that!
So when I'm shivering in my flat trying to save some pesetas on the heating bills and a kind-meaning correspondent from the UK says 'Lucky you, being in Spain this winter!!' I can but laugh (or weep, and weep, and then weep some more!).
