BATS!!

BATS!!
Newdowns Head and Man and His Man, Cornwall.
The conical grids are to stop humans and large animals falling down these tin mine shafts and to allow the free to-ings and fro-ings of the many bats that colonise them.

Nor had I, Rosa until about 10 or so years ago. I could see that they were useful in preventing humans and animals from falling in but that was all, I thought. I only knew about the bats when I overheard a teacher with a group of schoolkids and he was explaining it. A few days later, by co-incidence, I read about it in a Cornwall magazine while waiting to get my hair cut! Now you see them all over Cornwall.
