Cette race primitivement galloise existait au début de notre ère. Elle semble avoir été sélectionnée à partir du 'Welsh mountain' avec l'influence du cheval ibérique, de l'Arabe et du Hackney.

L'espérance de vie du cheval domestique s'est allongée grâce à une meilleure gestion de son alimentation ; elle se situe désormais entre 25 et 30 ans. Les poneys vivent un peu plus longtemps.
