View from Pointe du Hoc
Here is the view to the east from Pointe du Hoc. Pointe du Hoc is promontory on the Normandy coast overlooking the beaches that on D-Day, June 6, 1944, were code-named Omaha. The American landings there were stalled until the Army Rangers scaled the cliffs and took the fortifications there.
Gun Emplacement
This is one of the gun emplacements near Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach taken by the Army Rangers on D-Day, June 6, 1944. It stands on the cliffs above Omaha Beach and was a part of the defense that delayed the landings until the Army Rangers scaled the cliffs and took the fortifications there.
Sunset at La Plage des Tilleuls
This was taken while watching the sunset from La Plage des Tilleuls, Tilleul Beach. We had walked there after walking the cliffs from Etretat to the Antifer Lighthouse.
Sunset from the Sorcerer's Cave
One of t he evenings we stayed in Le Tilleul we walked to the beach and watched the sunset there while exploring the Sorcerer's Cave at the east end of the beach. This was the view east from the cave.
Mont-Saint-Michel
The final day of our stay in France we drove from our guest house in Le Molay-Littry near Bayeux to Mont-Saint-Michel and after a brief visit there drove back to Cherbourg where we took the ferry to Dublin. It was raining at Mont-Saint-Michel, but we walked the causeway to the island and walked up through the town to the abbey. We did not have time to visit the abbey and were quite wet when we arrived back at the car but enjoyed our visit nonetheless.
Mont-Saint-Michel
The last day of our stay in France we drove from our guest house in Le Molay-Littry to Mon-Saint-Michel before driving back to Cherbourg where we took the overnight ferry to Dublin. It was raining at Mont-Saint-Michel and though we got quite wet we walked the causeway to the island and explored the town. We did not have time to see the abbey, but enjoyed our brief visit there, this photo taken from up in the town.
Bayeux Cathedral
This is another photo of Bayeux Cathedral's light show. We did not know about the light show but were in the area of the cathedral when it began and stayed to watch.
Rain Spout
This is one of the rain spouts at Bayeux Cathedral, a rather interesting way of draining the cathedral's roof.
Normandy American Cemetery
These are some of the graves at the Normandy American Cemetery near Omaha Beach. Many of the burials were of soldiers killed after D-day but there are 9,385 burials there.
