Balsamroot and Bee

These are some photos of a common but beautiful wildflower found all over the drier areas of the Pacific Northwest, the Arrowleaf Balsamroot. In the spring it covers the hillsides and brightens the forest understory. It was used both for food and medicine by the native Americans.

Common Camas

Common Camas is a beautiful prairie wildflower of the Pacific Northwest but was an important food plant as well for native Americans. It's sweet bulbs could be roasted or steamed and eaten or ground into a powder and used as a sweetener or flour. These were photographed near our home where it grows in abundance.

Grass Widow

These are some of the first wildflowers to bloom in the spring here in Washington and we are eagerly awaiting the time when they do bloom. We had about eight inches of snow yesterday with more predicted for today and Sunday and we are more than ready for spring.

Yellow Bells
