There are nightmare areas of the high plateau in Texas like this.. cept no snow.. just appalling feed stations and bleakness.

Superbe composition

We liked the Palouse when we lived in Pasco, particularly the canyons down by the Snake. The winter white-outs can be freaky, however. I remember one memorable time on a back road out of Touchet, when the snowy hills and the sky were the same color--
