Miss Sugar Skull

A sugar skull, or calavera, is a Mexican treat given as offerings or gifts on Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). That holiday, from Oct. 31 through Nov. 2, is celebrated in the Spanish-speaking Americas, including some regions of the US, but Mexico is thought of as Day of the Dead headquarters. Families visit their relatives at the cemetery, maybe have a picnic, some music and honor the deceased by sharing the party with them. It can be very beautiful, especially in the evening. It's somber, but there is also humor and a party atmosphere.
These skulls have become very popular with young girls in the USA and it can be seen as a patch for a jacket, a tattoo, accessories for bedrooms, doodles on their school notebooks or Halloween costumes. Glorious photos of the celebration from Mexico and Guatemala: tinyurl.com/ycml9oup
In California cities, The Day of the Dead is blended with Halloween and makes for some extra-wild celebrations.
