Hi Diane. Please excuse my ignorance but what are corn dogs and candy baps? Obviously popular whatever they are. Do they also sell American Vegemite?

It's a hot dog on a stick, dipped in cornmeal batter and deep fried. Slathered in gobs of mustard. The result? Delicious! Sort of an American fish and chips without the chips - with my apologies to fish.

The other sign says Deep Fried Candy Bars, which would be dipped in flour batter. That is something that even I, as sugar-mad as I am, can't fathom.

I plead innocence, Graham. Diane used the phrase first and I am still puzzled!

Also deep fried Mars bars are famous in Scotland!

I'm glad Australia has its internationally known Vegemite but I only use it spread very thinly on a salad sandwich or on toast under scrambled egg.

I also like scrambled egg on toast and marmalade.

Go PEANUT BUTTER! Especially the crunchy type.

Re Corn Dog, the comparable food in Australia is generally known as a Pluto Pup.

Lol! Yes it is a funny exchange, Graham! I did try a little Vegemite when I was down there, but nobody told me to just barely apply a thin coating. It reminded me of sardines for the extreme saltiness, but you use those very sparingly, too. So, I won't be buying any here, but I can see how it would be pretty good used sort of like a condiment rather than in a thick gob! Hm, sorry I missed the Pluto Pup!

Spam! Our favorite breakfast on 1950s camping trips was scrambled eggs and pan-fried spam. Did you know that Spam is (informally) the state food of Hawaii? A dish they call Plate Lunch is a favorite. The standard combo would be rice, eggs, macaroni salad, Portuguese sausage and Spam. Either One-scoop plate lunch or Two-scoop plate lunch, referring to how much rice you want. Each culture in Hawaii has invented its own Spam dishes. There's this beauty originally created by the islands' Japanese immigrants. Spam musubi:



Spam was introduced during WWII by, of course, US military personnel. That's also how it got to the Philippines, Korea, Guam, the UK and elsewhere. Sales of Spam are still going strong due to the introduction of versions like Hickory Smoke, Hot & Spicy, Garlic, and more.

I believe you're right. It was imported during the war from the US when meat was in short supply generally.

Vegemite and Marmite are both yucky. However, most of the world also hates peanut butter. I don't! P. butter and orange marmalade on lightly toasted bread is one of my favorite snacks and, no, I haven't tried Elvis' favorite - p. butter and banana sandwiches. ;-/
