Well, that's interesting, I found "Kittly-benders" by chance, reading my 1910 edition of Walden published in Boston. That's how it is in there: "Let us not play at kittly-benders.There is a solid bottom everywhere." it's about four pages from the end of the book." On looking it up most references are to "kitty benders", with the same meaning, or, when citing Thoreau "kittlybenders" without the hyphen. I shall write a thesis on it immediately. Whatever, it's one of those words you don't forget, once heard!

Yes, very interesting...and a thesis is absolutely in order. Do you suppose there was a very old typo error when citing that phrase, then it got carried to the present without anyone checking? After all, kittly is an invented word and kitty isn't.

Yes, I did think typo error, but I like kittly over kitty, which sounds like the maltreatment of small cats. My thesis is progressing.
