A very large home abandoned in 2001 due to asbestos contamination in the soil. It was a WWII Marine hospital and rehab base and when the barracks were demolished, the asbestos in roofing material was transferred to the soil. This situation became very controversial at the time, because independent scientists found no more asbestos than would be in average soil of this region. A few residents stayed and there has never been a report of medical problems caused by asbestos.

Why didn't they find that out before building there?? Well, I suspect, the people still staying haven't been there long enough for negative effects to appear.

Later, testing by an independent group of scientists found only a trace of asbestos, about the same as found in average soil. There might have been testing before they built, I don't know. Personally, I think most residents panicked too much and the government had to buy the properties. The whole affair was very controversial at the time.

This house is superb and seems in perfect condition. Is it really abandonned for 15 years ?

Yes, hard to believe, isn't it? It's been taken over by pigeons, marmots and other critters underneath and in the attic, but the materials and paint are still good. The house next to it is way more deteriorated because of much lower quality! I suspect there is a regular security patrol here, paid for either by the remaining residents or by federal Superfund money - or both.
