Yes, and there were other sealed doors and windows, or sections that had collapsed and been repaired with a different material. I have a feeling that the big stones were the original material.

That's a splendid image that synthetizes with a so a smart texture the works which have been done along the centuries to restore the ancient houses or any building..indeedwith any sorts of ancient stones or bricKs..sometimes even stolen from other ancient houses already collapsed!!
Well..the Popes used to to steal ancient roman marbles and columns for their palaces and churches!! And it isn't ..anti-papist gossip! ;-)

Many, many thanks, Bea! Oh yes, I know about the shenanigans of the popes from art history courses. Also, the recycling of collapsed buildings. The repairs of these ancient walls and churches were fascinating to see. It's SO amazing that many of these, built hundreds of years before official building codes and inspections, are still standing! Precious legacy of Romans.
