"Unusual mast arrangement."

You seem to posses a maritime culture... are you a sailor too?

This rigging is called Lateen Sail (Lateen being the English version of the word Latino - Latin)
it surely is uncommon in northern Europe but on the contrary very common in all Mediterranean countries and in most Arab ones too. It dates back to ancient times (they have found pictures of Roman ships using this rigging) and it was the first kind of rigging which allowed to sail close-hauled (which means towards the wind). (By the way the caravels of Colombo had one Lateen sail beside the square one). It was used until recent times here for fishermen boats.

To see how this rigging worked see this picture: www.lorenoconfortini.it/pic/210/vela_latina.html

I grew up up in a small port and was always around coasters, colliers and small craft but work took me away although I have always retained an affinity with the sea,
The inter island ferries are my only sailing these days I am afraid.
Thank you for the information.

An interesting choice of scene for a black and white shot and it works so well Skipper. The detail stands out nicely. A lovely shot
