HFF~ A Hubberholme Gate
|
|
|
|
We are in the Hubberholme valley just a mile or so west from the village and come across the gate barring our path. Fortunately the bit of string fixing the gate to the wall is soon undone to let us proceed. The River Wharfe runs on our right side here. The PiP shows the same valley.
Hubberholme is an old village in Upper Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire
Have a good weekend.
The Kylerhea ferry
|
|
|
|
A twenty minute ferry crossing takes cars and pedestrians alike from main land Scotland Glenelg to the Isle of Skye hamlet of Kylerhea. A rather unique craft as the entire car deck is on a turntable and is used at both ends to embark and disembark. I even got the impression that the turntable was turned entirely by hand too after watching it being manhandled around to be locked straight . I am on Skye here and looking up Loch Alsh with the mainland on my right. From here there is a gruelling road trip before reaching the main roads of Skye.

Another reminder of our US trip that included Portland, Maine. Here we see one of its lighthouses, affectionally known as Bug Light. Built in 1855.This elegant-looking lighthouse is unique because it's believed to be the only lighthouse in the world shaped like a 4th-century Greek monument. Four Corinthian columns hold up the lens.
Enjoy the day.

HBM~ A view from Kylerhea

A fine little walk here above the Kylerhea Ferry crossing on the Isle of Skye. The bay across from us is on the mainland and shows a place called Bernera with Glenelg tucked away behind. The walk itself was called the Kylerhea Otter Haven walk and we walked to the Otter Hide without a single sighting. Ironically an Otter was playing just metres from our cottage window back at Balacara whilst we were here.
HBM, enjoy the week.
The road down to Kylerhea

A promise of a better weather day takes us back onto the Isle of Skye towards the old ferry crossing of Kylerhea near the village of the same name on the east coast. As you can see, not the weather we had hoped for, especially on this very hairy road. From here we can just about see the idyllic village of Glenelg across the water. Our destination lies just beyond sight at the bottom of the road then left for a mile or so. The weather was to improve!

Compare that with the same place but wide angle on another day with the phone. PiP

We are back in Studley Royal Water Gardens Park and this is just one of the lakes that form this park. The River Skell makes this all possible. Just to the left of me is a slight dam and weir then behind me is the start of the Seven Bridge valley walk.
Enjoy the weekend.

Some days back I posted a shot of this castle from the Northwest (PiP) and so here is the opposite view. Depending on the time of day and season both these views can be quite intoxicating and different. Another thing that changes is the tide here on the meeting of three Lochs; Loch Alsh, Loch Duich and Loch Long. The building clouds were soon to give us heavy rain and a familiar heavy gloom. However I managed to shoot a few shots that I could be pleased about.
"One of Scotland's most iconic and most recognisable castles set in the majestic NW highlands. The island's original castle was built in the thirteenth century; it became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies, the Clan MacRae. Between 1919 and 1932, the castle was rebuilt. The restoration included the construction of an arched bridge to give easier access to the island."

The countryside of Britain has been completely domesticated my man over the millenniums. Here we see agricultural land with a dry-stone boundary wall. Seen near Leyburn.

A walk in the country can give us many things that reach our senses. Here we have a touch of summer with this old broken wall and a dead tree. The foxgloves gives us some colours to concentrate on but I am afraid you don’t have the sounds and smells to go with this scene. Sorry!

Aug 19, 2024 ~ Annie Kenney - suffragette
|
|
|
|
For this special 'World Photograph Day' I share a photo from my home town of Oldham and one of its famous past inhabitants. We are outside our old Town Hall here with its relatively new statue of Annie Kenny.
In this age of more and better rights for women and girls across the world it seems a fitting reminder of how much harder it has been for our womenfolk to be recognised as having the same human rights as men.
"Ann Kenney (13 September 1879 – 9 July 1953) was an English working-class suffragette and socialist feminist who became a leading figure in the Women's Social and Political Union. She co-founded its first branch in London with Minnie Baldock. Kenney attracted the attention of the press and public in 1905 when she and Christabel Pankhurst were imprisoned for several days for assault and obstruction related to the questioning of Sir Edward Grey at a Liberal rally in Manchester on the issue of votes for women. The incident is credited with inaugurating a new phase in the struggle for women's suffrage in the UK with the adoption of militant tactics." Wiki
"Women’s rights are human rights! We are all entitled to human rights. These include the right to live free from violence and discrimination; to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn an equal wage. But across the globe many women and girls still face discrimination on the basis of sex and gender. Gender inequality underpins many problems which disproportionately affect women and girls, such as domestic and sexual violence, lower pay, lack of access to education, and inadequate healthcare.
For many years women’s rights movements have fought hard to address this inequality, campaigning to change laws or taking to the streets to demand their rights are respected. And new movements have flourished in the digital age, such as the 'MeToo' campaign which highlights the prevalence of gender-based violence and sexual harassment. (Amnesty International.)

As we walk towards the famous Eilean Donan Castle we start to see examples of art making a visit even more enjoyable to the millions of tourist per year. A wonderful carved bench beckons us onwards.

Loch Alsh from Balmacara

A panoramic phone view from the front of our cottage overlooking Loch Alsh. We are looking south at the Isle of Skye here. It was here that I glimpsed an otter one day but I missed it when it was on the wall eating its catch a day later. On our last night, these flat waters were to reflect the aurora borealis but like the illusive otters we missed those too. Such is life sometimes!

As we are staying not too far from here it gives us an opportunity to get some updated photos in somewhat better weather than the last time I saw it (pip). I took a few snaps but I liked this one against the mountains perhaps the best

A walk in a valley that we have not seen for many years. Its quite wild looking but most of it is surrounded by pastoral fields. To our left just some 30 metres or so is one of our favourite rivers: The River Wharfe. Our path goes on now for another 2-3km before turning back well above this spot and beyond. Always nice to see the wild summer flowers. The characteristic dead tree also giving our eyes something to dwell on.
Hubberholme is an old village in Upper Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire, England, at the point where Langstrothdale meets Wharfedale. It is quite secluded and the nearest village is Buckden.
Have a good weekend.

This stunning walk to that wonderful bay of Port an Eorna also gives some good alternative vistas. This view looking north towards the Applecross Peninsula (I think)

This is the short walled lane from the village centre to the most beautiful Shawl walk here in Leyburn. I liked the muted colours in harmony here.
