European Goldfinch

European Goldfinch
Carduelis carduelis: another of our feathered friends here taking advantage of our winter sunflower seeds. These are not solitary birds they arrive on our feeders as a flock of a minimum of four sometimes as many as ten. It is little wonder that we have to replenish this feeder daily.

Enjoy full screen.

I love this beautiful goldfinch, Herb. I see lots of these around here. I often see goldfinches together with bullfinches feeding on the meadow sweet. All the best, Joe

Hi Joe -thanks for this. We first started seeing these in our garden in 2018 and since then they have made it there home. Funny enough, I rarely see them elsewhere. At first they were about equal in number on the seeds here to the Bull finches but we have not seen many of those over this winter but a few days ago we saw a couple both male and female. Glad you like this too.

Cheers. Herb

Yes it seems that they have now made the North of England their home. Glad that you too have the pleasure of seeing the red heads with flashes of yellow in their wings.

Cheers. Herb

What a beauty.............and a cracking shot Herb, full of super colours and lovely detail. Very well captured.

We used to get these in abundance around five or six years ago.........and we haven't seen any in the garden at all for ages. I've no idea why, as they are still common throughout the UK.

We do get a lot of magpies and jackdaws in the garden.......and of course the squirrels. One of our neighbours has 7 or 8 cats which roam the neighbourhood. So perhaps that's partly why we're not seeing them.

Great that you admired this one Keith. It seems that we have attracted your birds then. Cats and magpies, we too find the scourge of our gardens but at the moment their number has diminished for some reason.

Keep well. Herb
