Llanthony Priory

Llanthony Priory
A trip to this 900 year old ruin is the highlight of the day for us. We are looking at it, almost in its entirety, from the back.

Remote Llanthony, locked away in a dramatic location in the Vale of Ewyas beneath the brooding borderland Black Mountains that rise abruptly from this evocative ruin, still radiates that spirit of isolation and contemplation. Norman knight William de Lacy founded a hermitage here when he — untypical of the times — abandoned war and embraced religion. By 1118 Llanthony had become a monastery of Augustinian canons, which continued until it was suppressed in 1539.

A really impressive set of ruins Herb................and in amazing condition considering their age and history.

This needs to be viewed large...........you'll be rewarded by seeing the wonderful light on the stonework and the superb detail in the shadow areas.

I love the contrast between the vibrant green of the foreground and the subdued colours of the background...........and the ruins stand out nicely in the frame.

A fantastic capture!

Brings back the memories, Herb of a climbing weekend in the Brecons. It rained so hard and solidly that we abandoned any plans re: climbing or even walking and instead we spent a day here getting soaked but it was a fascinating site and then on to Hay on Wye, out of the rain and in the bookshops.

Aye, the weather can be wet around here and cold too as we witnessed. This is just a few miles north of Abergavenny which as you know is not far from Hay-on-Wye.

Cheers. Herb
