Poggioreale was hit by an earthquake in the night between January 14th and January 15th, 1968. The seism struck the whole western Sicily and in particular the small towns of Belice river valley, causing some hundreds of casualties. The new town of Poggioreale was built a few kilometers from the ruins of the old one. Which has become a ghost town, a witness of its own past.
The Castle of Sperlinga is a singular fortress almost completely excavated in the rock. In 1282, during the War of the Vespers, the Angevins took refuge here and for thirteen months they held out against the forces of the Sicilian rebels.
