Galleria Umberto I - Cupola

La galleria Umberto I è una galleria commerciale costruita a Napoli tra il 1887 e il 1890. È dedicata a Umberto I d'Italia, come omaggio al Re e in ricordo della sua generosa presenza durante l'epidemia di colera del 1884, che mostrò l'esigenza di un "Risanamento" della città.
Progettata anche con l'intento di essere essa stessa un'opera monumentale, al pari delle altre circostanti (Maschio Angioino, Real Teatro San Carlo, Palazzo Reale, basilica di San Francesco Di Paola)]la galleria Umberto I, sin dalla sua costruzione, divenne immediatamente un fondamentale polo commerciale della città di Napoli, grazie anche all'ubicazione che la vede circondata dalle strade dello struscio quali via Toledo, via Santa Brigida e la non lontana via Medina. Anche per la sua vicinanza a importanti luoghi della cultura e della politica, la Galleria ben presto divenne anche centro mondano della città, a tal punto da essere scelta nel 1896 come sede della prima sala cinematografica della città, nonché una delle prime in Italia, voluta dal padovano Mario Recanati, dove furono proiettati i primi film dei fratelli Lumière.

The Umberto I Gallery is a shopping arcade built in Naples between 1887 and 1890. It is dedicated to Umberto I of Italy, as a tribute to the King and in memory of his generous presence during the cholera epidemic of 1884, which showed the need for a 'redevelopment' of the city.
Designed also with the intention of being itself a monumental work, like the others around it (Maschio Angioino, Real Teatro San Carlo, Palazzo Reale, basilica of San Francesco Di Paola)]the Umberto I gallery immediately became a fundamental commercial pole of the city of Naples from the moment it was built, thanks also to its location surrounded by the streets of the struscio (the fashionable streets) such as via Toledo, via Santa Brigida and the not too distant via Medina. Also due to its proximity to important cultural and political venues, the Galleria soon also became the social centre of the city, to such an extent that in 1896 it was chosen as the site of the city's first movie theatre, as well as one of the first in Italy, commissioned by Mario Recanati from Padua, where the first films of the Lumière brothers were projected.
