Thanks, Keith. I have a thick book about the butterflies and moths of eastern North America. It is an overwhelming subject. If I get desperate, I have a friend at the university who is an expert on moths.

Checkerspots all have rounded wings.
After long searching I found it, it is a Freija Fritillary, Boloria freija.
Great find! Congratulations. Yours looks faded, but could be that it is old.

Thanks for checking on that, Dörthe. This is far from the range of the Freija fritillary, but you got me looking for a better match. I am thinking it may be a great spangled fritillary (Speyeria cybele).
