And just out of sight to the right on the far bank is a pub called the Lollards' Pit, because that's where they used to burn the heretical Lollards. And behind this spot are three fine half-timber houses, including one that may well have been there when Elizabeth crossed the bridge.

North American tourists rarely go to Norwich, and they are missing out. The city is full of fine old buildings (including a stunning cathedral) and fine newer ones. The last time I was there I was shocked at hearing an American accent. I've been trying to persuade everyone I know over here in Canada to visit but for a medieval experience they seem to prefer beetling through to York. But York isn't surrounded by Norfolk.

You are absolutely right, John; but Norfolk is ignored by the folks who live in the UK too. It is difficult to get to, although the road system has improved considerably in the last 8 years. I have to say that York is surrounded by Yorkshire, so Norfolk has some stiff competition. Keep plugging away encouraging Canadian tourists, and I'll try and get more photos up here from East Anglia.

And York, I have to admit, has that wall thing. I looked up the oldest half-timber building on Bishopgate, and found it goes back to the 15th century, so Elizabeth could definitely have seen it as it was then if she was on the left side of her carriage and had the curtains open. However, there was further building in the 17th and 19th centuries, so the original building could be unrecognizable now. It's a grade II listed building.
