We are "social media nomads", not like those who are travelling around the world and keeping their personal blog or vlog about it, but folks who try to survive in the jungle of social media services. We try to find best and cheapest place to share our creativity and hunger for inspiration. And what makes us as nomads is the fact that nothing seems to continue forever, especially not the social media services.
Who remembers such communities as Multiply and My Opera? Who will soon remember Panoramio?
I came here from a community where active photographers had only handful of groups focused on photography, and there I was a member only on two groups at best times. That community was now closed My Opera community: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Opera
I arrived here with few of my friends in December 2013, hoping to get our 'Shoot & Tell' group continued here. It soon turned out Ipernity community is very different from what My Opera was. New members were "headhunted" to myriads of groups almost savagely.
Around the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014 there also was that great "SPAM war" going on at Ipernity. Some people were actively keeping noise about "reward groups", where group admins and mods were posting even very large icons on comments to acknowledge their members for contributing on their groups. And I say I still agree that those "award groups" indeed were spamming, and still are. I suggested to my fellow 'Shoot & Tell' group admins to keep very low profile, to avoid any such conflicts.
As a result, most of my old friends either stopped using Ipernity and this group, or at least we all stopped using 'Shoot & Tell' actively. I guess this is because hardly no-one here at Ipernity seemed to respect any of the group rules. People just seem to join without much acknowledging the possible group rules, and just start contributing. And I admit becoming very similar.
I think this is sort of "groups too easy to use syndrome". And this is maybe because it is even too easy to establish groups on any possible subject. Everyone wants to have a group of their own and come up with something "original". There are groups for cats, groups for red, groups for matchboxes etc. There is of course nothing wrong about that, but it eventually has turned into a situation where for example I'm (or was) a member on more groups than I could count. And definitely I no longer remember what are the possible rules on all of those groups without checking them again when considering to contribute.
The point is that in the future I personally should become more careful on deciding onto what groups I want to join and be a member. Although, such a behavior can easily turn against myself, because in a community like this Ipernity is, one soon may get a bad reputation if one does not join to each suggested group. People easily may start to judge the person based on what group s/he belongs to, or at least ask why their group is not good enough for some particular users.
But that's life! =) We have to choose sides, even when we don't want to. If one does not do that her/himself, then others do that for her/him.
Update December 1, 2017: I have limited my group membership to less than 30 groups, and today closed also the Shoot & Tell group mentioned above, because it also turned out totally inactive.
Update March 25, 2018: The current plan is to keep the number of groups below 20. Especially the more specific is the group topic, the less likely I have anything to post on such group or time to visit and see what others have posted on that topic.
Update December 10, 2020: Number of group involvement increase little. But that is because voluntary work for ipernity has required to do so. But in general, less groups where I have no time to visit.

Yes, I remember Multiply, I came here from there as Ipernity was very similar albeit in construction, Ipernity was a social site where most forms of data could be shared in a social manner. At the time of Multiply's take over by the big investors and their obvious plans to make the site a selling portal set thing in motion among many such as I the search for a new home. Many were suggested by various contacts and or users, I tested 13 sites but found none to my liking, many were new young places that did not live very long.
I have never been very interestedin groups as were apparently the Norm on Flickr from where many migrated with their groupds to Ipernity, they placed demands upon the team resulting in many new functions being added, many are still full of bugs, but it was these groups that the huge 'Logos' came from and needed to be locked especially as many were planted from several groups where one user was a member of these said groups.
Where do we go from here? a good question, those the came from Flickr are hardly feeling like returning to it, G+ not a good idea as Google can't be trusted even though they say 'We are not evil'.
Hope something nice can be found or better still a lifeboat to save Ipernity which I think is best as Ipernity is a Unique social website.
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Stormlizard club"For me the casual nature of Instagram is currently the most appealing. I really don't care if someone even sells some shots of mine without my permission. World is so full of pictures anyway! We have come far from what Susan Sontag wrote about photography in 1970s. Pictures are no longer taken to preserve the history. Today pictures are "speech bubbles" on global chit chat."
And I mean that =) So, I don't see G+ as a big evil. It is no worse than 500px, Instagram or Facebook. After all it comes to the fact that what is the most appealing service, and where the friends go. At Instagram I have found some of my old friends from the My Opera times ;-)
Stormlizard club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubI know that many of my old friends from Multiply are on Ring of friendship and or Schmoozezone, both being sites created by former Multiply people, both are also on the verge of going down the tubes. If Ipernity cannot be saved I will cease to post my work online.
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Stormlizard clubIt is a perfect place for "phatic communication", to say something like "hello" to keep the communication channel alive.
But it is also a great source of information.
And please people, try not to take this behaviour of mine as a personal critique. I'm only choosing on what groups I think I'm able to be active in the future. This is in no way meant to be a critique against any of you as a person ;-)
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to LutzP clubThanks for sharing your thoughts ... :) Happy New Year Sami
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Clickity ClickFotocommunity once had a good group system, but abandonned it with the last relaunch.
If Ipernity survives it might be an idea to discuss the structured former FOTOCOMMUNITY system, if it would be suitable for Ipernity . . .
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Bergfex clubmalona club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubThe remaining members still try(tried)to keep it going. Now it's almost come to a standstill. think it's because of the uncertain future of ip on the one side, and on-off people on the other side....
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to malona clubIt also requires a certain platform to work well. How the images are arranged on group web page is significant I think. Here at Ipernity it works.
malona club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubSami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to malona clubI also began checking on my contacts, some Club some Free riders 7 of them had been Club members had died but it seems that they can't go online from where they ended up to cancell their accounts. I left Guestbook messages on those that had been Free riders to see if a response would come.
While doing this I noticed that 'Paul' Autofantasia had been doing the same. One thing it did prove was that there were not 97 thousand free riders.
Another negative about joining too many groups is that one uses far too much time replying to comments and or commenting that there's no time left to do ones own stuff.
We now today know that we are 99.9% sure of being saved, will we still, or will Ipernity still be here in ten years time, if so it will be a first.
John.
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Stormlizard clubI rather follow the "news of contacts" feed.
Stormlizard club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubEver since the Flickr brigade joined in 2013 I was bombarded with invitations to groups which I never accepted because I could see how many group members there were, many of them were members of several groups with the bad habit of just sending a list of logos with the words 'Your photo was admired in. A very lazy way of trying to be social.
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to * ઇଓ * clubIn general I try to choose groups based on topics where I'm active. For example if I take something like one flower shot per year, then that hardly is a place for me contribute.
The positive side of this "movement" hopefully is more caring and active groups, like TSC, Macro Mondays 2.0, Bilderdomino, Happy Fence Friday and number of others.
raingirl club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubI've also been appointed admin of a couple groups (from admin's leaving), and those are harder to get a grip on. May very well close some of those. But I will query the members first.
I also do not belong to most 'other' social media... No faceless or twitless accounts.
I do belong to one other site.. one which is animal related and I have been on for 11 years. One we had to fight to keep for 4 of its 12 years.
People complained about the 8 mths it took for Ipernity to be 'won". They have no idea in many cases how short a time that was !
I think people just have to decide what they want to do with their time. Also.. to support what they enjoy... and support it well.

Pam J club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubI have a flip phone... it makes phone calls. We have next to no cell reception in the rural area I live. Smartphone is pointless.. and often dumb phones too !! I love technology.. but not at the sacrifice of reason. What scares the heck out of me is so many no longer know how to read a book... write a letter. Actually sp wds not in sh !!! Yes.. really spell !! Add up a column of simple figures in their heads . Hold a conversation ..........

Gudrun club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubSami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Stormlizard clubStormlizard club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubDie Gruppen sind die größte Fehlkonstruktion dieser ansonsten wunderbaren Website.
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Bergfex clubI just ran a search with letter "a" for groups, and it gave over 1000 hits. And on top of the list for example group like this: www.ipernity.com/group/138487
Supposedly many groups like that will become deleted once we get rid of the old accounts and "free riders".
raingirl club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… clubSami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to raingirl clubI once planned to take a role of a "group killer". I would have asked Rob to promote me as an admin on myriad orphan groups, remove members on them, and then turn them private and closed. That would prevent the admin role getting forwarded to yet another abandoned user account. Then leaving the group myself. And once the only remaining admin would get the account closed, the group would become deleted.
But I guess the best way is to just sit at wait...
I will usually say OK if someone asks me to add my photo to their Group but I have rarely ever taken any interest in looking at others photos in a group. The exception is Happy Fence Friday which has a social element like everyone at work going to the Pub after work and it is a way of spotting people with something of interest ( although rarely with a fence in their best photos)
I have been promoted to Admin in some groups one I don't mind, not sure about the others. Perhaps the Admin should be allowed to close them down ( after giving fair warning to any members who would like to take on the role).
Groups ( very specialist ones) may be a way of attracting new users but only if the deadwood is cleared from the forest.
I propose you re-apply for the role of Group Killer and enjoy yourself.
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Colin Ashcroft clubHe left ipernity after became attacked by many others. But he surely caused it by his own actions.
See for example here: www.ipernity.com/blog/team/628979/comment/28633725#comment28633725
But he managed to make Ipernity S.A. to add the feature with what one can limit who can post images on comments.

To work as a "Group Killer" unfortunately frightens me more than it attempts. Based on few observations on how some people react and behave here at ipernity, I think such a large scale actions would cause a "shit storm".
But I have not forgotten that "dream". I have only not done it yet, hoping to get to see the day when someone wins in a lottery, and donates money to get ipernity reprogrammed.
