I haven't been to the cinema in so many years I can't even remember the film. When I was courting Margaret we used to go regularly as most couples did back then. A new Elvis film was a must to see,all Margaret's idea her being a big fan. I remember going to a couple of the early James Bond outings and we took the kids a few times of course I remember taking Ellen to see Bed-knobs and Broomsticks.
I remember the weekly family treat was a trip to the Walney Cinema when I was a child. There were little 4 seat rows at the sides and we used to sit in them every week. I can't remember any of the films I don't think what was on mattered it was just a family outing. On the odd occasion when family funds stretched we would call at the chippy on the way home. A bag of chips between my sister and myself and fish and chips for our parents was the perfect way to end the evening. We got a little piece of fish broken off the old folks piece, I still remember the taste of the batter it was the highlight of the night for me.
My dad once told me that when he was a young man cinema audiences would applaud at the end of films which seems very strange.
I don't think the cinema is a cheap family night out nowadays,a night at the flicks and a fish supper for a family of four would cost an arm and a leg and these new multi screen buildings don't have the grandeur of the old cinemas. Most of them were converted music halls and very ornate bringing a taste of luxury into our lives for a brief few hours
