After snow flurries and ice on Tuesday, I wrapped up warm and braved the weather to attend an eye appointment on Wednesday. I came away after 90 minutes with a sinking heart, and another appointment for Monday next week. In the last 3 weeks I’ve noticed a marked reduction of vision in one eye. I’ve had my eyeballs photographed – looking good, the layers in my eye too – looking good also, however my eye test showed a huge reduction in vision in the one eye. I also have a lot of new ‘floaters’ in my eye, some of which are quite big – comparatively speaking. I had a Fields Test too, to detect my field of vision, and an examination using microscopic lenses which showed I have tiny crusts on my eyelids – unseen by the human eye, thankfully, but they need dealing with. I need to put warm compresses on my eyes, and then clean them using cotton buds and baby shampoo diluted in sterile water, just like I did years ago for my ‘bad’ eye.

Monday, I have to have a special dye put in my eyes, wait half an hour, then have them checked again to see what’s going on. My father had diabetes, and glaucoma and cataracts, and the latter two are what they’re now checking for, and I could need eye surgery. I had eye surgery some 13 years ago, and it wasn’t a good time. The worst of all this? It’s my ‘good’ eye that is now an issue.

I won’t be having new glasses for now as they want to see what’s going on, and in a few months, with the rate this deterioration came on, new glasses could well be a waste of money as they may not last long. Depending on the outcome, and any further changes, I may need new, cheap lenses just for driving so that I’m safe and legal. Bummer!

If I do need eye surgery, I could be looking at a 4 or 5 month wait, by which time I may have lost any usual vision in the one eye. I am not a happy bunny :(
