And other misnomers: Change can be good, but not always. It depends on if the change is beneficial. In work we’re changing who supplies our printers. At present we have large printers that are situated around the building that can print, photocopy, scan, and even fax. Basically they do everything you need, except make the tea ;) Most of us have finally got used to these printers but apparently they’re all going to be changed over the summer to new machines and a new brand. I look forward to it with a great deal of trepidation.
Following a meeting, a few of us have to contact staff regards health and safety. There were so many names of staff that none of us knew that I think the ‘others’ are slowly creeping in and taking our jobs. Definitely not a good change!
I heard another one recently, made by an Aussie chef called Mat; ‘everyone loves a good avocado.’ No they don’t! I can’t stand them and think they smell disgusting. Someone else recently stated that everyone is waiting for a certain plot reveal on Eastenders (a soap). Not me. I’ve never watched it. A radio 2 DJ tweeted that he didn’t know who a particular band/artist was, and was greeted with a raft of ‘everyone knows that.’ Well, apparently not and I’d never heard of them either. Language is littered with these sayings or expressions and I confess they often irritate me.
Another source of irritation is from an article I read today which stated that female scientists are paid, on average, £5,000 pa less than men. In some universities, such as Bristol, this disparity rises to a difference in salary of £21,000 pa! It’s disgusting. Why on earth should women be paid less than men if they’re doing basically the same job? I thought sex discrimination was illegal in the UK? They seriously wonder why women aren’t entering the field of science in higher numbers. Mind you, IT isn’t much better and both are very male dominated and always will be if women aren’t paid the same as the men. There’s nothing quite like disparity in salaries to make women feel undervalued. Maybe that’s part of the plan…
Going back to my blog on Apologies etc., I feel I should apologise to a student who says she failed part of the recent test because she should have been allowed extra time. I must apologise that I didn’t have my psychic head on that day and of course should have known that she was allowed extra time even though she failed to let anyone know! My bad…
Take care if going out and about over the next few days, especially in the UK. Temperatures are set to soar, humidity will be up, and the pollen count is very high. Night time temperatures will be high too, and for some of us, this makes for a very uncomfortable night. Enjoy it if you like it, I’ll be hiding indoors as much as I can lol.

Personally I'm not a fan of avocado's.. I don't see what all the fuss is about. Mushed up they look like bad baby poop to me!
And how come you don't have ESP so you would KNOW what that student (almost wrote stupid. Maybe that's more appropriate) needed??
And you are definitely right about the salaries! It's in so many areas still & not just the sciences and IT.. I am in IT and I am a glaring example. I work with 8 men. I do a lot of what they do but am of course, the lowest paid. Technically my title is System Admin Assistant but I don't do much like a regular admin. I create pc and VMware (virtual) system accounts, change & update them, do level 2 trouble shooting, can fix the printers, etc etc.. I do some but no where near as much admin work. Yet I'm paid as strictly an Admin.. They won't change my title so my only resource is to back off some of the things I do. Which I have done over the last year of so.. Took me long enough to get smart.. But I'm retiring next year so that helps the frustration.
The pollen count has been horrendous in my area the last few months.. I too hid when feasible...
I also agree that all people regardless of gender should get the same reward for the same job.
When I was working for the Admiralty and then Civil Engineers, I did exactly the same job as the men but was paid half what they earned. Certainly not fair
I've heard some companies use the excuse of maternity as a reason to pay women less. I had my son after I was made redundant - no company lost money because I had a baby, and of course some people choose not to have a baby so it doesn't fly. It's pure sexism and wrong IMO
Stormlizard club has replied to Bee OrchidMany use the excuse that women are weaker and can't do heavy work yet many drive trucks and busses.
We have the start of the hot weather maybe, well not so much hot at around 24c but the humidity is stifling
I too thought differences in salaries was a thing of the past
Bernie - When I was married and working full time, we both did the housework and cooking; it's the only fair way to do things. When I was a stay at home Mum, I was more than happy to do all the housework and cooking because he was out at work all day. We all choose how we share chores, but I wouldn't work full time, and do ALL the housework and cooking if I had a partner. My son is home at this time, and he does his share of chores to help out.
