And other misnomers: Change can be good, but not always. It depends on if the change is beneficial. In work we’re changing who supplies our printers. At present we have large printers that are situated around the building that can print, photocopy, scan, and even fax. Basically they do everything you need, except make the tea ;) Most of us have finally got used to these printers but apparently they’re all going to be changed over the summer to new machines and a new brand. I look forward to it with a great deal of trepidation.

Following a meeting, a few of us have to contact staff regards health and safety. There were so many names of staff that none of us knew that I think the ‘others’ are slowly creeping in and taking our jobs. Definitely not a good change!

I heard another one recently, made by an Aussie chef called Mat; ‘everyone loves a good avocado.’ No they don’t! I can’t stand them and think they smell disgusting. Someone else recently stated that everyone is waiting for a certain plot reveal on Eastenders (a soap). Not me. I’ve never watched it. A radio 2 DJ tweeted that he didn’t know who a particular band/artist was, and was greeted with a raft of ‘everyone knows that.’ Well, apparently not and I’d never heard of them either. Language is littered with these sayings or expressions and I confess they often irritate me.

Another source of irritation is from an article I read today which stated that female scientists are paid, on average, £5,000 pa less than men. In some universities, such as Bristol, this disparity rises to a difference in salary of £21,000 pa! It’s disgusting. Why on earth should women be paid less than men if they’re doing basically the same job? I thought sex discrimination was illegal in the UK? They seriously wonder why women aren’t entering the field of science in higher numbers. Mind you, IT isn’t much better and both are very male dominated and always will be if women aren’t paid the same as the men. There’s nothing quite like disparity in salaries to make women feel undervalued. Maybe that’s part of the plan…

Going back to my blog on Apologies etc., I feel I should apologise to a student who says she failed part of the recent test because she should have been allowed extra time. I must apologise that I didn’t have my psychic head on that day and of course should have known that she was allowed extra time even though she failed to let anyone know! My bad…

Take care if going out and about over the next few days, especially in the UK. Temperatures are set to soar, humidity will be up, and the pollen count is very high. Night time temperatures will be high too, and for some of us, this makes for a very uncomfortable night. Enjoy it if you like it, I’ll be hiding indoors as much as I can lol.
