- 21 Feb 2013Buddy Clark (Samuel Goldberg) died at 37 when his plane crashed on Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles. Five other passengers survived the 1947 accident. Buddy hit the top ten with songs like "I'll Dance at Your Wedding", "How Are Things in Glocca Mora", "Peg O'My Heart" and "Linda". Jack Lawrence composed the song at the request of lawyer Lee Eastman for his daughter. Linda Eastman became a noted photographer and wife of Paul McCartney. - 21 Feb 2013Rumour has it that John Lennon wrote "Bad To Me" specifically for Billy J. Kramer (William Ashton) and the Dakotas, also managed by Brian Epstein, while John was vacationing in Spain. According to Wikipedia the John Lennon demo was recorded May 31 of 1963. That same year it became the first Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas chart topper in the UK and top ten in the U.S. the next year.

- 27 Jan 2013P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri composed "You Baby". This the the P.F. Sloan demo take. It was first issued by The Vogues (high school friends Hugh Geyer, who is still with the touring group, Bill Burkette, Don Miller and Chuck Blasko) in 1965. The Turtles (Howard Kaylan, Mark Volman were later known as Flo & Eddie) hit the top twenty with "You Baby" in 1966. It was also the title of their second album.

Wildwood Days
- 24 Jan 2013The Dovells (Len Borisoff aka Len Barry was lead) sang "Wildwood Days" (Kal Mann-Dave Appell) about Wildwood, a town in New Jersey. It was on the flip side of the top ten "You Can't Sit Down" in 1963. Bobby Rydell (Robert Ridarelli) recorded that "B" side and hit with "Wildwood Days" later the same year and on the same Parkway-Cameo label. It reached the top twenty.

In 1983 New York's Cyndi Lauper's version peaked at number two on Billboard. The Grammy and Emmy winner married actor David Thornton decades ago with minister Little Richard performing the ceremony.

- 20 Jan 2013The Bell Sisters (Cynthia and Kay Strother) recorded "Boom, Boom (My Honey) (Milton Kellem) in 1956. The original recording was made by Roy Hogsed in late 1951 as "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" but was not released for quite some time. Patience and Prudence (McIntyre) followed their hit "Tonight You Belong to Me" with the 1956 version of "Gonna Get Along Without You Now". It peaked in Billboard at number eleven.

Mr. Lonely
- 19 Jan 2013As a teenager Buddy Greco (Armando Greco) was a pianist for the Benny Goodman Orchestra. When he entered his twenties he went solo and began singing. In 1962 he recorded "Mr. Lonely" for Epic Records. It became the first single release of the tune to chart on Billboard. Bobby Vinton was a big band act on Epic Records. "Mr. Lonely" was one of the few of his many hits that he composed. You'll find it on his 1962 "Roses Are Red" album. It became a number one hit for Bobby in 1964.

Shake, Rattle and Roll
- 17 Jan 2013Jesse Stone was an in-house writer at Atlantic Records who composed "Shake, Rattle and Roll" in 1954. The blues and band singer Big Joe Turner became a rock and roll hero when he was the first to record the standard at the age of 43. Bill Haley was one of the pioneers of rock and roll. He may have been blind in one eye, but he and the Comets (The Saddlemen) took "Shake, Rattle and Roll" to the top of the charts in 1955.

Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer
- 16 Jan 2013Singer, television and film star Willie Hagara worked for the Austrian Postal Service. It was Willie who first recorded "Du Spielst 'Ne Tolle Rolle" (Hans Bradtke) in 1962. That tune became "Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer" (Carste-Tobias) a top ten hit for former jazz pianist Nat "King" Cole as an album and a single in 1963.
