Bob Merrill (Levan) wrote "Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania", one of the many hits he wrote for Guy Mitchell including "Truly, Truly Fair", "She Wears Red Feathers" and "Sparrow In The Treetop". Bob's inspiration for the song occurred at a boxing match when the announcer introduced one of the fighters from "Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania" and instantly Mr. Merrill heard the music in his imagination.
Guy Mitchell (Al Cernik) with the talented label executive, producer, arranger, orchestra and chorus conductor Mitch Miller hit number six on Billboard with "Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania" in 1952. Like so many other recording artists Guy was even more popular in England than America. In less than twenty-four hours he sold out a two week engagement at London's Palladium in 1952. Guy topped the charts twice in the U.K. before he reached that achievement in his native land.
