In his autobiography, Richard Adler got the idea for the title "Everybody Loves A Lover" from his lawyer based on the Shakespeare quote "all the world loves a lover", after Adler expressed concern over his then wife threatening to expose his illicit romance. In reality this was a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote. In 1958 Doris Day (Kappelhoff) recorded "Everybody Loves A Lover" (Robert Allen - Richard Adler) and reached the number fourteen position.
The Shirelles (lead vocalist Shirley Alston, Doris Coley, Addie Harris and Beverly Lee) Luther Dixon produced late 1962 version of "Everybody Loves A Lover" peaked at nineteen the next January on Billboard's Top One Hundred. The 2011 Broadway musical "Baby, It's You" included the story of The Shirelles.
