Built by order of D. Dinis between the 13th and 14th centuries, probably on top of an ancient Romanized settlement. Belonging to the Order of São Tiago, it was composed of a citadel and a wall that surrounded the village. Its vestiges are implanted in the top of the hill that dominates the vast plain of Ourique. On the remaining sections of the wall, a garden and viewpoint were built with a tank in the centre. To go to the place of the castle we pass under this arch, walk up a stone path, pass under this pleasant shaded tonel to discover the statue of Dom Afonso Henriques and a superb view.
