This is just one panel of what would have been a multi-panel Winnipeg card likely by C. S. Co. (although the back of this section of the card is not the panel with the publisher information or the address). The message reads, October 32, November 1, 1908: Once again it is hello Cousin Louise. Received your card of the old wreck are you there yourself? If you are you don't look like any of our family. Suppose you will laugh at the idea of us calling this a city but it really extends farther in the opposite direction than the way it is taken, however we will not compare it with New York at all. Warren."

Garry Street, Winnipeg, Man.

Interesting Valentine & Sons card showing Garry Street in Winnipeg, looking north to (and beyond) Portage Avenue. On the right the tall building is the Garrick Hotel, with the small building farther down (which is still there as well) -- the Inglis Building (or Northwest Commercial Travellers Building) was built a year or two later on the site that in this image is occupied by the Angelus Cafe. In the distance one can see the tower of the Maltese Cross Building. The Bank of Nova Scotia appears to be complete at left (the white building) -- this suggests that the image dates from 1911 (plus or minus 1/2 year). The Valentine serial number is 107,228.

Posted September 6, 1911 at Winnipeg: "Arrived O.K. Didn't miss my train. Am enjoying every minute. Saw Ricahrds yesterday + was speaking to Mr. Black over the phone. Muriel M. Bliss" Addressed to P. Q. M. S. Carmen, Militia Dept., Ottawa, Ont. P.O.O.'s office. The image seems to show the houses and other buildings along Osborne Street North, behind the U of M building (in what is now Memorial Park). Valentine & Sons card no. 105,781. This event took place on October 7, 1909. The schools involved were: Aberdeen, Alexander, Argyle, Carlton, Dufferin, Gladstone, Isbister, Somerset, John M. King, King Edward, Lord Selkirk, Luxton, Machray, Mulvey, Norquay, Pinkham, Strathcona, Victoria and Wellington.

Winnipeg - Main street East Side [front]

Nice Ed Justement image of Main Street, showing the Palace Hotel. This is taken from the CPR Bridge, I expect. It is looking north from the subway. The receipt stamp is dated December 19, 1905 at Saintes-Charente-Inférieure, France. Here the Belgian printer seems to have believed that "Ed. Justement" stood for éditions Justement, which would mean "Justement Publishing (Co.)", and took it on itself to expand the abbreviation to "Edit." Of course it actually stood for "Edmond".

Steamer "Winnitoba" on Red River, Winnipeg, Man.

12 Jul 2013 693
Valentine & Sons card no. 105,147 posted on September 11, 1912 at St. Boniface, Man. to Mr. Justus Morria, Acton Vale, Quebec, with a message in French. The Winnitoba was a popular passenger vessel owned by the Hyland family. It mainly carried passengers from central Winnipeg to the Hyland amusement park downstream around Middlechurch. This card provides a nice view of the ship, which sailed for only a couple of seasons before being destroyed in a fire.

Kelly Block Fire, Winnipeg

This is a Lyall card which I'm interested in mostly because of the printed label in the lower margin -- I have seen this only once before on a Lyall card. It is the only time he appears to have issued a numbered series.

Kennedy Street - Winnipeg

24 Jun 2013 2 320
Sender Stella [Elewaut] writes: "Winnipeg, December 14, 1905 My dear cousin, Here is a view card of Winnipeg that I'm sending to add to your collection. I await your news. Lots of kisses from your loving cousin, Stella. All the best to your family." It is difficult to identify where on Kennedy this is.

Kennedy Street - Winnipeg [back]

Back, with addressee in Mont St-Amand. This is one of the three types of back that L.J. De Nobele used for the series of sixty (or more) postcards issued in 1905-06 at Winnipeg.

Royal Alexandra C.P.R. Hotel, Winnipeg

11 Jun 2013 1 288
Valentine & Sons card no. 101,374, showing the Royal Alexandra Hotel and the C.P.R. station from Main and Higgins. Interestingly, at lower right it is signed by Eugene Haberer, who was apparently a Montreal artist and/or engraver at the time. This image may have been prepared in advance of the hotel's opening (early 1906?). It is difficult to tell whether it was done on the basis of an actual photograph or not. The buildings in the background (on the left) appear to me to be figments of the imagination (and of course there is the usual faked street life -- cars, carriages, streetcars, etc.) Would be interesting to know more about this one. The identical image is used in the Clubb/Tom Jones postcard, but the right edge is trimmed off of that one and the remaining first few letters of the Eug. Haberer signature appear to have been deliberately effaced.
