Shorncliffe Camp in Kent was one of the main training sites for Canadian troops. This poem gives a sense of their mood before crossing the Channel.

Passed lake Superior this morn. It is all frozen up at Port Arthur + Fort William both. Just went through a great long tunnel, all dark. Will write soon. Isobel + Ross." Note the "Islands for Sale" sign on the side of the building.
