Government House with Parliament Buildings in Back…

08 Jan 2014 251
Valentine Edy card no. V.E. 1000, showing a nice angle on the new Legislature. The card likely dates from the 1920s but is unused. The reverse includes the standard Valentine & Sons split-globe logo and states "BRITISH MANUFACTURE".

5989 - The Merchant's Bank - Post Office

08 Jan 2014 316
Russell, Lang & Co. card (as apparently republished from the Detroit Photographic Co. original -- no. 5989) and turned into a Christmas greeting card. It's an undivided back, likely from 1901 or 1902 but not dated or posted.

Rosser Avenue, Brandon, Man. Looking East.

08 Jan 2014 341
N. Co. (Nerlich) card posted at Brandon on August 8, 1911 and mailed to Miss Isabel Madge of Virden with a message from Louise concerning her thoroughly enjoyable trip to Winnipeg and the Beach. Note the signs for Martel and Christie's Bookstore, both prominent publishers of postcards. The Christie's (misspelled) sign looks like it's printed on the card.

Best Wishes from Canada - Toronto

Posted at Whitby, Ont., on October 5, 1906 to Miss Girlie Leitch of 592 Spadina Ave., Toronto from Violet B. The card is Warwick Bros. & Rutter no. 1912A.

Stacking at Myrtle (Man.)

08 Jan 2014 252
Unused De Nobele card, no. 44, showing the stacking of hay at Myrtle, Manitoba. Again the typography -- specifically the placement of the parentheses and the use of a colon where we would use a period -- gives away the fact that these cards were manufactured in Belgium.

Market Square, Winnipeg, Canada.

Rare view of the expanded Market Building, which had been converted from market stalls into civic offices after space ran out at City Hall. As can be seen here, the market continued on the outside of the building. This card by the Post Card & Greeting Card Co. of Toronto is numbered 63-5 and was sent on July 11, 1936 to Miss Joan Reeve at Victoria Beach from her father.

[Alex]

Taken at Royal Studio with their stamp (299 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg). "Woodbine Hotel, Winnipeg. I am still enjoying life in Winnipeg. Billy and I are coming home next summer. Tell Mrs Adams and all the rest I was asking about them. Your old Friend, Alex." This was addressed to Miss Maggie Adams, Adams Temperance Hotel, Aberdeen, Scotland and postmarked December 6, 1910. No doubt the fur coat would have been regarded as something quite exotic by the recipient.

[Horse-Drawn Carriage]

08 Jan 2014 233
Winnipeg Photo Co. card with no caption. Not mailed but it has the following notation: "These horses are Bronco's. Smart looking animals, but they know how to go though. See the happy smile on the one."
