Elephant

The first book of the apocryphal Maccabees (I Macc.6,43ff.) describes the fight of a certain Eleasar against an elephant of the enemy. He placed himself under the monster, and stabbed it in the chest. It broke down crushing the soldier underneath. The stuff heroes are made of. In Antiquity, elephants were formidable adversaries (Hannibal’s use of them is well-known). The soldiers riding them were protected by towerlike structures built on the animals’ backs, not quite like the one on this painting, however. The elephant, too, doesn’t seem to be quite true to life.

And they were gone. The elephants got smaller, but as a picture, I like this one best.

It takes courage to face an African elephant at such a close distance. As you see, after my last haircut I have to wear a cap to protect my head against the cold.

Elephants at Icking 1

Sunday afternoon. A pleasant walk to the Isar nearby. I took my camera, though it was gloomy, and I had little hope of taking any noteworthy pictures. For once, I was lucky. In Winter, we have to reckon with things like this. Nevertheless, an encounter with elephants is always spectacular. I took several pictures, and found it difficult to keep the camera steady. My efforts to repair the first photo of the series were only moderately successful.

Elephants are sweet, but not really housebroken. Even the biggest Icking gardens could easily be dunged with ... this. Teil vom Beitrag / Part of the thread “Elefanten an der Isar”.

Sorry, but does this have to be? And must someone take pictures of it? Teil vom Beitrag / Part of the thread “Elefanten an der Isar”.

Teil vom Beitrag / Part of the thread “Elefanten an der Isar”.
