This dirt road inland highway from the far north of South Australia traverses some hundreds of kilometres of desert to cross the border of the state of Queensland. It essentially links two extremely remote outback towns - Marree in SA and Birdsville Qld. It is a dusty, corrugated dirt road, impassable if there is rain. Although this was taken from a sightseeing plane over Lake Eyre, we have driven this long dirt track, to Birdsville and beyond, on a camping journey to far North Queensland.

On the road in Central Australia, near Docker River....taken with my phone through the car windscreen! Around 1200 kilometers like this.

Leh-Manali highway across the roof of the Himalaya, at 4,500 meters altitude. The road passes over many Himalayan high passes, over 5000 meters. It is closed and under heavy snow for at least 6 months a year. The snow, landslips and erosion make the surface very unpredictable. It is often blocked or destroyed completely. It is also narrow, as it is so hard to make roads in this terrain. So 'Highway" as it is here does not resemble anything in the west.......it takes two days to do the 420 km journey.
