Olinda is a UNESCO town in north east Brazil, in the State of Pernambuco, on the coast. Settled almost 500 years ago by the Portuguese, this hilly town of cobbled streets and coloured, art filled spaces, became home in the 70s to large numbers of artists. It has an enormous Carnaval which brings a million people in to swell its small population during its celebrations. It has marvellous old Portuguese historical sites and lots of art, in tropical splendour.
Best wishes to all for the week ahead. The news about the resurgence of Covid in Europe is so worrying. Hoping everyone keeps safe and healthy.
Thanks for visits and comments...so appreciated.

The Opera House in the Jungle, in Manaus, in the middle of the Brazilian Amazon jungle, was featured in the Herzog film Fitzcarraldo. Built in the developing rubber boom town of Manaus in the 1880’s, every component of it was created in Europe and shipped to Brazil, then a further1500 kilometres inland up the Amazon where it was built. It has been in constant use ever since, with Vogue magazine declaring it one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world.
Nureyev and Fonteyn, Sarah Bernhardt, and nearly all the opera greats of the last 130 years have performed here. It is an amazing sight, the more so considering its location and history. I spent a couple of days, and nights in and about it....astonishing.

Crab-eating fox

Brazil. The Pantanal, the giant savanna, which spends some months each year under water is home to a dazzling variety of wildlife. The crab-eating fox primarily eats crabs and aquatic creatures during the wet. When the dry season arrives, its diet becomes one of insects and small prey. It is a delicate little animal.

Brazil, in the wild.a beautiful little animal, and a sad reminder of the one billion animals which have been incinerated in our cataclysmic Australian fires. At least 50, 000 koalas, plus sheep, kangaroos, cattle, parrots, echidnas, wombats, various species of birds, horses, repltiles...heartbreaking. And still burning. Apart from the immediate destruction, most of the south east of Australia is thick with choking smoke, a giant plume of which has blanketed New Zealand, and has travelled across the Pacific to choke residents of Chile and Argentina.

In the wild, outside our window in the huge natural area of the Pantanal. He’s doing his best to attract a lady with his house building skills!

Alacantara, Maranão. North West Brazil. This baroque town, in the 1600s, was the centre of cotton trading and is now sleepy, and quietly decaying. Well off the tourist tracks.

Brazil, the Pantanal. This is a very large kingfisher, about 30cm high. This is in a lagoon where we were catching piranhas...with an audience of hungry birds!

A caiman, wild, in the Pantanal in Brazil. This was the dry season when the waterholes were almost empty...there were caimans all along the roadsides. The whole area is a giant flooded wetland for some months of the year, and impassable at those times.

Traditional potter. Vitoriá . Espiritu Santo. Brazil. For many generations these families have run this traditional pottery producing a unique style of wares. Note absence of any safety features, not least the rubber flip flops while working with fire, freshly fired pots, and shards of wood. Very hot and tiring work.
