Apatani tribal women in remote Arunachal Pradesh, India. In older women, tattoos and nose plugs were customary. The next generation quit the nose plugs, while the younger ones have divested both of these customs

Arunachal Pradesh. North East India. This cultural practise of nose plugs and tattoos is now only found among older women in the Ziro area of this remote and difficult to access province. It has been banned and will be gone in a generation.

Gujarat. India. I asked if I could photograph the beautiful clothing of these shy young women....they had made these traditional outfits themselves...and they wore this style daily. Rural, desert Gujarat. J'ai rencontré ces deux jeunes femmes dans un petit "café" au milieu du désert dans les régions rurales du Gujarat, en Inde. Elles portaient ces vêtements magnifiques et traditionnels qu'elles avaient elles-mêmes cousus. C'est leur style vestimentaire quotidien......... lourdement brodé et splendide

Thar Desert. India. I photographed it like this with the thorn trees and wheel in front of the women to symbolize how they are cut off from the world. In terms of money, education, opportunity, they have nothing...and geographically their two houses are surrounded by thorn trees and desert. They and their families attempt subsistence farming in this isolated place. There is no electricity or sanitation.
