One of Australia's most common and well- loved birds, these little insect eating fantails are found across the continent. They rarely sit still as they flit around chasing insects. Also are known for their high pitched song, usually described as "sweet pretty creature".
Town Hall wall

Charleviile Town Hall in late afternoon light, at the end of a long day's drive (just under 700km). This is slightly out of sequence for my trip, but it's Wednesday and I needed a wall! With that thought, Happy Wall Wednesday, everyone. UPDATE That's not a dinosaur out front, it's a big kangaroo with a hat and camping swag.
Age of Dinosaurs fence

Fence at the Age of Dinosaurs Museum coffee / eatery area - presumably to keep dinosaurs away. :-) The Museum is built on one of the flat-topped hills I have shown in the area, known as the "Jump-up" - the PiPs show further images from the access road .
Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend.
Brolgas

Brolgas are large cranes (wings to almost 2M) , native to the north and eastern inland parts of Australia. When I saw these just after we left the Dinosaur Museum they initially took off (PiP), but fortunately they landed again some distance away and I was able to get this image. They are distinguished by their red heads.
Meet 'Banjo'

Taken at the "Age of Dinosaurs" museum at Winton, this is their recreation of Australovenator wintoniensis , found locally and given the popular name "Banjo". The museum was created some years ago after a local grazier found dinosaur bones and gained support for ongoing searches, research and a public museum. This whole area is/was dinosaur country! Also see PiPs and a Happy Wall Wednesday, everyone.
Mulla Mulla flowers

Mulla Mulla flowers are native to the arid inland areas across Australia. I'm fairly sure these are the Pink Mulla Mulla variety. We happened to be there at the right time to see many flowering. See also PiP.
The full size! Road trains #4

I have realised that my earlier road train images may not have conveyed their full size. When they're in a side road, or turning from one, that size becomes more apparent. Best viewed large - also see PiP of a double deck cattle truck.
White-necked Herons

These are found across Australia. The speckling on the neck indicates that these are juveniles. Maybe best viewed large.
Fence in landscape

Out in western Queensland, between Boulia and Middleton. Taken at the Cawnpore Lookout, the name presumably from when the stagecoaches (previous image) began travelling here. Another image, with the modern road, in the PiP.
Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend to follow.
Hilton Hotel

Out at Middleton there isn't just the old stagecoach-base pub, the Hilton Hotel is also to be found there. View large to fully appreciate that this is luxury itself, it even has an ATM machine!
Middleton Hotel

Middleton was the middle one of nine horse changing stations for stagecoaches on the run between Winton and Boulia - a 384 km trip then taking four days. Nothing remains of the other eight coach stations, making this one of the most isolated pubs in Queensland. The coach run here operated until somewhere between 1915 and 1920 and at that time Middleton had a school, police station, store and community hall. Only the pub still operates.

On the verandah of the Middleton Hotel. Middleton (population 4) was the middle one of nine horse changing stations for stage coaches on the run between Winton and Boulia - a 384 km trip then taking four days. Nothing remains of the other eight coach stations, making this one of the most isolated pubs in Queensland. I wouldn't take the sign out the front (PiP) too seriously in this semi-desert area!
Happy Bench Monday and have a good week, everyone.
Red-tailed Black Cockatoos
16 Sep 2023 |
|
|
|
It was a pleasant surprise to come across a flock of these cockatoos near the road. Thankfully they stayed when we stopped and didn't go far when they took off as I took this image. See PiPs for later images. They have helmet-like crests, males have the red tail panels, the females have small yellow spots and black barred yelllow-orange on the tail feathers.
Signs!

When I took this, the sign that caught my attention was the one in the middle (to assist the ipernity translator, it reads "ALL DOGS must remain confined to the vehicle".) :-)
Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend to follow.
This PiP with the vintage petrol pumps was taken near the main image. Leaded petrol was stopped in Australia late in the last century.
Eucalyptus flowers

Many small Eucalypts were growing along the roadside. I'm fairly certain they were one of the Mallee variety, possibly Round-leafed Mallee, which grows in the inland. Either way, it was a bonus to find these flowering and with seed pods .
Rock Isotome

These flowers are native to the dryer rocky areas of inland Australia, such as hillsides and gorges. I was very pleased to find them on the slopes of Baldy Top (see previous images).
Dual power pump

Windmills such as this have long been common in Australia to pump up subterranean water. It's interesting to see them now being backed up by solar panels for windless days. There's also a fence here. Wishing everyone a very Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend.
Climbing to the plateau

Copy from an old negative developed at Mawson and reposted larger than previously. This is the preparation for the start of the 1966 Spring Trip from Mawson, showing two tractors hauling a caravan to the plateau. It was too steep and slippery on the blue ice for one to be able to pull the loaded vans and, even then, it had to be one of the larger vans at a time. Once there, the caravans and sledges were organised into three tractor trains (see PiP).
Mawson station is on the rock at right of the harbour - viewed large you may be able to see some buildings and radio masts. In the distance is an assortment of icebergs among the sea ice.
Much as they're trying to pretend, the husky pups really weren't hauling anything. :)
