The huge bushfires of 2019-2020 burnt in New South Wales for over 240 days and covered an area of 5,520,000 hectares. Our local Botanic Gardens were not spared - as can be seen from the blackened scorch marks remaining on the tree trunks, despite other vegetation regrowth. This bench also was burnt - also see detail in the PiP.
Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and an enjoyable week.

Back again after a "post Covid lockdown" trip to visit friends and family (restrictions just lifted). I must admit that photography was far from the main priority, so fairly few photos - and then I inadvertently lost some shots when I returned home today.
It was very sobering though, that so many hundreds of kilometres of the trip were through burnt forest such as you see here, from the late 2019/early 2020 fires. At least this area is regrowing (if very slowly), so I feel comfortable in posting it for the Happy Fence Friday.
Have a safe and enjoyable weekend and a HFF everyone.
Coastal walk #1

It was great winter weather, so I joined some friends to take a walk in the nearby Murramarang National Park. It had all been burnt in the huge fires of late 2019/early 2020, as can be seen by the charred tree trunks, but it is recovering - some parts more than others.

Poor Nerrigundah

Almost three years ago, I posted a series of images from a little village called Nerrigundah and put them into an Album. The village was built following a gold rush here in 1861. In 1866 while holding up the whole town and making a gold robbery, a gang of bushrangers killed a local policeman here. This is the memorial to him (click on the PiP to read the story) .
Sadly, the vast bushfires of late 2019-early 2020 almost destroyed Nerrigundah entirely. Many of the locals sheltered in the Fire Shed (the green building at right) and only a handful of houses survived. The base around the memorial has been replaced, but the historic shops and other buildings have all gone - this was taken from about the same angle as the PiP.
I had intended to post this on a Friday, but it really doesn't feel right for HFF....
For the next few days I shall be almost entirely offline due to other commitments (all good). Best wishes all, especially to Andy for your ongoing recovery.

Pauline is on a new treatment, which allows us more spare time, so for the second time in over twelve months we went for a sightseeing drive. We covered about 250km, almost all burnt, with only small sections near towns and some houses saved from the devastating bushfires of late 2019-early 2020. After more than six months, many areas of forest remain like this. Stitched panorama, view large.

Trying to make something from the dreadful sight of burnt tree trunks, I feel this ICM image captures both the event and the scene. I'd suggest viewing large on black.

Along the Kings Highway

The Kings Highway in Australia runs between Canberra and the coast. It was closed by the bushfires for several weeks and only recently reopened for traffic. We travelled it yesterday, through some 40 km of forests terribly burnt by the ongoing fires (the fires no longer directly affect the road).

If only there was a need!

It may not be totally obvious, but this burnt roadside sign in the scorched landscape reads "REDUCE SPEED WHEN WET". I think everyone here would be delighted if there was enough rain to make this relevant! :-) In the PiP, an image of some of the damage to timber shops in the tourist village of Mogo - too depressing to add more.

We had to take Pauline for her weekly treatment in Moruya, a town some 30km away. The forest has been burnt for almost the entire route, as seen here. You might care to note that, although the trees have been burnt, in this area the fire did not "crown", the explosive event when the oils in the leaves literally explode in a ball of flame. Instead, the fire left the leaves which have dried and are dropping, as in the foreground - this allows fire to potentially re-burn the area.
A close call

The view to the south east of the AAO telescope (see previous images) shows signs of the huge fires that ravaged the area in 2013. Over 56,000 hectares were burnt, up to and including the tree stump to the right of this image. The telescope dome was less than ten metres behind me when I took this .... it was very fortunate (and a lot of effort from fire services) that it was not destroyed. View large.
