The barge removing some of the last remaining concrete piles from the old bridge. The old bridge (opened in 1956) now has totally disappeared. (Best viewed large on black).
Wishing everyone a very Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.

It seems likely the next stage of demolition of the old bridge will be to remove this remaining end section, with the large crane working from the barge. In the background on the right, the daily tourist boat is heading up the river.
Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.

The new Batemans Bay bridge (in the background) has been largely built with the assistance of a very large barge carrying giant cranes to lift the concrete sections into place. With the main construction now almost finished, the barge recently departed again. Another of my photos is in a PiP, as is an excellent drone photo taken by "South Coast Pix" and posted on Facebook with approval for sharing.
HFF, stay safe and have a great weekend, everyone.
The old barge

Moruya was a source of very high quality granite, with several quarries alongside the Moruya River. Most people would recognise the Sydney Harbour Bridge - the granite for the towers at the ends of the arch came from Moruya. It was taken up the coast on barges, and this wreck is (as far as I'm aware) the only surviving remains of one of those barges. Second image in PiP.

It is almost a year since I took the photo of the first of the two construction barges arriving to begin work on the new bridge (see PiP). They are each about 3300 tonnes, as they need to be to carry the giant cranes lifting these very substantial concrete sections into place for the new bridge. View large.

Far from my Norway series, in the past few days the "big event" for our little town was the arrival of a 3300 tonne barge which will assist with the construction of a large new concrete bridge to replace our current lifting bridge, AFAIK the last such operating in Australia. The barge had to be brought across the Clyde River bar at high tide (about 0300 that day) then under the current bridge at first light. The barge is about half the size of a football field and had well below a metre of clearance from the pylons on either side! View large on black.
