Large moth

I have to confess that I'm unable to give a positive identification of this moth, which came visiting just as dusk was falling. It was about 50mm long and I suspect is from the Cossidae family. This image achieved with photo stacking of three images and best viewed large. See also the (single shot) PiP image.

Not so fast!

Before you open the gate, check the handle! I was surprised to find this Convolvulus Hawk Moth sitting there. In the PiPs a closer image of it, also one of it on the grass. They are found throughout Australia (and I gather many other places) and can grow to 80mm wingspan.

The visitor

Some excitement last night when we found this large moth. More images in the PiPs (the second taken with the new phone). I think it is a species of Hawk Moth, but Australia has 10,000 named moth species and, it's estimated, probably as many again that are un-named, so I won't try to be definitive. :-)

The portable home

The portable cocoon home of a Saunders Case Moth (or Elongatus metura should you prefer the scientific name). These are found through eastern Australia and spend most of their lives in these silk cocoons enhanced with twigs. A second shot in the note gives an idea of the size of the cocoon. Explored.

What a haircut!

I'm fairly confident that this is the caterpillar of a moth: with less confidence it's from the Arctiidae family.
