Satellites

12 Dec 2017 22 26 868
The brighter trail is the International Space Station, as it dims when heading into the earth's shadow. Viewed large it may be possible to see the trails of five other satellites. Those two light blurs are the Magellanic Clouds, themselves small satellite galaxies to the Milky Way.

Horrified!

22 Nov 2017 21 15 755
Our little West Highland Terrier "Meg" had developed a very matted coat while we were away. So we sent her to the local veterinarian where she was given a comprehensive crewcut. The poor thing was totally horrified at the result and shunned us (except at meal time) for a few days. The note shows how she should have looked. We have promised we won't do it again. :-) Explored.

Myrtle Beach north end

23 Jul 2017 22 26 458
Continuing from my earlier images on Murramarang National Park, Myrtle Beach was the next to be visited. It was noticeable that the rocks on the headlands had changed: Dark Beach, shown earlier, is the southern limit of the sandstones found in the Sydney Basin. Another to view large.

Footsteps

Looking to the northern end of Emily Miller Beach and the few footsteps in the sand. View large, maybe while listening to this link.

Emily Miller Beach

03 Jul 2017 10 13 753
The "Emily Miller" was a small coastal trading ketch which was wrecked on this beach (and later retrieved) back in the 1800s. The beach is in the Murramarang National Park, on the south east coast of Australia.

The good ship Mullet

21 Mar 2017 25 16 603
Seen on the shore of one of the islands in Moreton Bay, near Brisbane. Explored (though it hardly looks an explorer's vessel). :-) Help save ipernity - www.ipernity.com/group/2260604/discuss/186760

Near the city

19 Mar 2017 28 18 751
There can't be too many cities with cliffs nearby that are suitable for rock climbing and abseiling! After a day at work, it now seems a popular way for many to relax in Brisbane (see also the note). View large. On the subject of rocks, a parting link to one the greatest rockers. Explored. Help save ipernity - www.ipernity.com/group/2260604/discuss/186760

Evening city lights

15 Mar 2017 29 16 715
Merged evening panorama of Brisbane. Not much of a sunset, but the lights made up for it. It's some years since I visited the city and I can't get over how much the buildings have grown - the bridge and City Hall (now lost among the giants) were once the tallest. Best viewed large. Explored. Spread the news: www.ipernity.com/group/2260604/discuss/186760

Warrumbungles view

09 Mar 2017 21 20 581
One of my favourite areas, the Warrumbungle National Park, viewed from the platform alongside the AAO telescope (see previous images). The National Park covers a little over 23,000 hectares and features the remains of a large shield volcano that was 50 km wide when it erupted 13-17 million years ago. Erosion has left a variety of bluffs, domes and dykes. The area is very popular for bushwalking and climbing. See notes and view large. HFF.

A close call

08 Mar 2017 16 11 610
The view to the south east of the AAO telescope (see previous images) shows signs of the huge fires that ravaged the area in 2013. Over 56,000 hectares were burnt, up to and including the tree stump to the right of this image. The telescope dome was less than ten metres behind me when I took this .... it was very fortunate (and a lot of effort from fire services) that it was not destroyed. View large. Explored.

The dome in context

This wider view gives some idea of the size of the dome for the 3.9 metre AAO telescope (see earlier images).
