From an old slide, copied too small and now re-posted. Not long after our arrival at Mawson station in Antarctica, sea ice began to form. The earliest stage was pancake ice, when the surface water develops into a slurry of ice crystals which agglomerate into small floes which bump into each other, causing raised edges.
