Arrival

05 Feb 2020 29 17 513
The helipad for the Moruya Hospital is right outside the Cancer Care Centre. I had commented to Pauline that it would be good to see a helicopter arrive when, to my surprise, one arrived half an hour later. This was taken through the hospital window. A few days later, the bushfires in the area burnt to the limit of the trees in the background, a few hundred metres, causing the hospital to be evacuated. UPDATE 5 Feb: This fire, at nearly 100,000 ha, was declared to be under control this afternoon.

Gypsy Lady

30 Jan 2020 41 39 598
While passing Moruya airport, near the river mouth (see my 29/1/20 image), I saw this Erickson Air-crane firefighting helicopter departing for duty (see also clickable PiP) These all have names painted on the front, this one is "Gypsy Lady" , which leads me to this musical link. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

While passing Moruya airport, near the river mouth (see my 29/1/20 image), I saw this large Erickson Air-crane firefighting helicopter departing for duty. Another (clickable) image in PiP.

Plateau Helipad

Helicopter arriving on the Antarctic Plateau.

Looking south over the plateau

29 Oct 2012 1 628
From an old slide. From the helicopter the contours of the plateau ice become more visible, as do the flow lines and the areas of crevassing. The coastal ice cliffs are about 30 metres/100 ft high. Our journey inland on the Spring Trip took us approximately in the direction of this photo (though away from the foreground crevassing).

Aerial Mawson

29 Oct 2012 2 2 512
From an old slide. I was fortunate to have a trip over Mawson in one of the helicopters carried by the Nella Dan. This is taken roughly toward north, with the station area in the lower right on the shores of Horseshoe Harbour. The dotted lines on the snow at lower left are the doglines.

Up and away

29 Oct 2012 13 7 814
From an old slide. I was fortunate to take a trip in one of the Fairchild Hiller FH1100 helicopters that the Nella Dan was carrying. This is the coast to the east of Mawson, with the second helicopter alongside.

Reflections

19 Dec 2020 16 7 546
From an old slide. Reflections in Vincennes Bay, near Casey station. Taken about midnight in January 1966 (it was summer and we were at the Antarctic Circle). At this stage it was recognised that the Beaver aircraft was unusable, so the tailplane and wings had been removed.

Out across the pack ice

From an old slide. Looking out across the pack ice past the Bell 47 helicopter and Beaver aircraft, in near whiteout conditions.
