Waiting at the airport

In the passenger terminal at Canberra Airport (see also PiP). I can only presume that these statues must have been fully dressed when they arrived, but that they disrobed after an airconditioning failure while they have waited for their flight!
Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and a good week to follow.
Waiting coaches

These coaches travel on the Canberra to Sydney run. For those interested, they're run by a company called 'Murrays Coaches' and both are BCI "Cruiser" models (809 and 816) made in Australia.

Looking from the National Arboretum across part of Canberra, Australia's capital city, on the far side of the lake running through the centre of the city. The main urban area is behind the hill to the left of this image, but this shows Parliament House at the far right.
I'll now be away for some days, wishing everyone all the best until my return.

Looking from a suburb of Canberra toward the mountains known as the Brindabellas.
HFF and have a safe and enjoyable weekend, everyone.

A large sculpture in the Canberra Airport international terminal. Here's the musical link that PAM J prompted me to add. :-)

Some of the knitted poppies outside the Australian National War Memorial, commemorating Australians lost in WW1. But a far larger number of survivors carried scars for life. Lest we forget, indeed - but have we learned? Here's a relevant musical link. Stitched panorama, best viewed large.

Yesterday morning I spent several hours watching my grand daughter competing in her regional gymnastics competition. I'm very proud of her for achieving an overall Gold ranking. I used my K-1 with the under-appreciated FA-J 75-300mm which also performed well. Here are a couple of images (the second in a note).

The National Carillon
14 Jun 2018 |
|
|
|
The National Carillon stands 50 metres tall and holds 55 bells, from 7kg to 6 tonnes. It was a gift from the British government to Australia, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the national capital, Canberra. It was officially opened in April 1970. I rather feel that the bicycle racks were a somewhat later addition. :-)
I'm about to head away for a few weeks from this weekend, so I expect to be an occasional visitor at best. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.
The High Court

Australia's High Court building, another example of the "Concrete Brutalism" architectural fashion. I'd have to say it does look as if the concrete could stand cleaning. :-) Best viewed large.

The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Australia's national Capital, opened in 2008 and won an architectural award in 2009. I gather it attracts about half a million visitors yearly.

Heading upward with rays of dawn sunlight (and a little lens flare). Best viewed large, maybe while listening to this track.
I shall be away travelling for most of the next week and expect to have only limited and intermittent internet. Best wishes to all.

Commonwealth Avenue Bridge crosses Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, Australia's capital city. In the distance is the giant flagpole over Parliament House - to give an indication of size, that flag is about as big as a double decker bus!
Some good railings on the bridge, so HFF everyone (though it doesn't feel that way, with the news of iper....).

Canberra - Australia's Capital City

View from the lookout on Mt Ainslie across Canberra, Australia's beautiful capital city. In the middle distance is the Australian War Memorial, with Anzac Parade leading from it toward Lake Burley Griffin and, further, toward the old and new Parliament House buildings. The main city centre is to the right. Best viewed on black.
It's the Dart!

|
Many Goggomobiles were sold in Australia in the 1950s with a locally-produced glass fibre body, under the model name of "Dart". They're now uncommon and collectable.
They also featured in a couple of (locally) memorable TV commercials (not sure if these are suitable for the group Sight and Sound, but I'll try it as there's background music in the second :-)). They're short and good fun, as commercials go... tinyurl.com/jsmayle and tinyurl.com/guwnk7j
