Border bench

26 Jan 2025 23 25 127
Yes, Australia has borders - between the different States. This is the Northern Territory and South Australia border, where there is a bench (see note) and some much needed shade. As I write this, the temperature out there is over 40C. One from the archives. HBM and have a good week, everyone.

The mountain and the iceberg

06 Mar 2016 45 29 933
At the foot of Mt Cook, with the adjacent Hooker Glacier (marked with note) and associated lake. I understand the glacier extended to the photo position only a few years ago, now there's just this little iceberg. Explored.

Mt Cook evening

29 Feb 2016 47 30 810
Sunset over New Zealand's highest peak (3724m). Explored.

Across the lake: night

20 Jan 2016 29 21 795
Across Lake Wakatipu at Queenstown. Repays viewing large. Explored. My friend Tacheles suggested this as a musical link and I'd have to agree.

Toward the glacier

04 Jan 2016 34 19 710
On the walk toward the Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand's south island. Almost all the world's glaciers are in retreat - and those in New Zealand are no exceptions. For a comparison of how much, see the PiP note, copied from an information sign. Climate change at work. Explored page 1.

Looking north

25 Nov 2015 29 19 862
Looking north on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. Some years ago there was a curious movie called "The Piano" , set somewhere on this coast in the 1800s. Much of the story centred around a grand piano which came ashore through the waves (!) - and that gives me the excuse for this musical link to the soundtrack.

Wildflowers at Mungo

14 Jul 2014 7 7 482
I think (without being totally confident) that this is a native wildflower known as Australian Bugle (Ajuga australis) . The flowers are not very large, probably about 12mm across.

Port Lincoln Parrot (Ringnecked)

10 May 2014 22 20 912
The long-tailed parrots come in a spectrum of varieties. This particular version is found in the Eyre Peninsula area. An old shot, copied across from the other site.

Pelican reflections

11 May 2014 36 25 1187
Where there are fish in Australia, there almost certainly are Australian Pelicans! Another shot copied across from the other site.

Red Wattlebird

19 Sep 2013 12 7 929
Fairly common across southern Australia, the name comes from the red wattles (akin to ornamental ears). They love flowering trees.

Wind farm

10 Jun 2013 2 5 881
I think it's time I posted another mono shot. Wind farms seem to be either "love them" or "hate them". These are in South Australia
