Ring the bell!

03 Nov 2017 23 24 684
The big Buddhist bell at the Little Wild Goose Pagoda in Xian. The chime was every bit as impressive as the size would suggest. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone. UPDATE: I've found a youtube link to a similar bell, so you can listen: www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-CsvjXWYH8 SECOND UPDATE Tanja - Loughcrew has turned up a link to a video of this very bell : www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pCLWz4uKkM Explored.

Good wishes

We saw several of these boards in China, this one in Xian. In Chinese customs, red signifies good fortune. As it was explained to us, people put these red tags on the board and make a wish for the future.

Away...

The "Emperor" in the Xian stage show about the Tang Dynasty, closing the show and saying "farewell" (see also my previous image). I'm also about to depart for the next few weeks. I may have some occasional internet, but expect I'll be largely off line. Best wishes, everyone.

History on stage

13 Sep 2017 12 11 714
Xian was the Chinese Capital city for over ten different dynasties. One of those was the Tang Dynasty, considered one of China's greatest periods and now celebrated in Xian with a stage show of music and dance. It was a colourful and enjoyable evening.

City wall

The old Xian City Wall was built in the 14th century (and since rebuilt/repaired several times). It is one of the oldest and best preserved city walls in China. Unfortunately, heavy rain limited our explorations.

Food time

This thread has touched on food a few times. This restaurant in Xian (see also previous image) specialised in dumplings. Not just plain ones, but different types and all delicious and beautifully presented. Looking here back to the preparation area.

The 'Terracotta Warriors'

13 Sep 2017 16 7 636
Back in about 220 BCE, Emperor Qin decided he needed a durable army to protect himself in the afterlife. The "Terracotta Warriors" were the result: there are over 8,800 life size individual replicas of his army. Stored in a large wooden structure covered in an earth mound, they were only discovered in 1974, by which time the structure had long collapsed. It now is a major archaeology site, covered in a giant aircraft hangar style building, and visited by huge numbers of people. It was high on my "bucket list" of things to see in China. View large.
