Lord Howe Island has the world's most southerly coral reef and lagoon, courtesy of the warm current flowing southward in the Tasman Sea.

It's been a few weeks since I posted on our new local bridge under construction. As can be seen, apart from a section on the far side, the main structure is now almost complete.
It's Friday again, so best wishes for the weekend and stay safe, everyone. Not to mention a HFF to all!

A double rainbow at sunset, to complete the year 2017. (OK, I took it one year earlier.) :-)
A rainbow is usually taken to signify hope: let's hope that 2018 turns out to be one of the better years. And may you all find the pot of gold which, supposedly, is hidden at each end. This message in the IMA Team Blog also is worth reading.

I needed something for a challenge on "futuristic" - this was the result. Here's a musical link to match.

Imagine you had just driven to the beach, only to find the tide out, not much sand, and overcast weather! Still, it was uncrowded and a pleasant view. Marrawah, NW Tasmania. Happy Fence Friday!

I was barely in time to catch this sunset. Just a moment later the colour rapidly disappeared. Best viewed at "original" size in "See all sizes".

Wandering around the yachts and other craft berthed at Lakes Entrance, in the Gippsland Lakes. Unfortunately I was just a little too late for a sunset, but the first lights were coming out. This works well on black (press 'Z').

Taken while heading into Victoria, looking at a departing line of heavy rain showers. Alongside the road, a fairly typical rural fence. HFF!

The Portuguese Caravel 'Notorious' at Batemans Bay
18 Jul 2013 |

People queuing to inspect the replica 15th century Portuguese caravel 'Notorious' at Batemans Bay, NSW Australia. Though not totally proven, it is very probable that several ships of this type, led by the Portuguese explorer Cristóvão de Mendonça were the first to sail down Australia's east coast in the early 1500s - about 250 years prior to Captain Cook's trip in the 'Endeavour' !
I now have written and illustrated an article about the 'Notorious' and the early European exploration of Australia: Were the Portuguese first to explore the Australian coast? You can follow the doings of the 'Notorious' on Facebook - look for notorioustheship .
