Don't dip your wingtip!

Copied from an old slide. The ship rolled particularly badly one night during the storm. The result was that the Beaver aircraft dipped a wingtip causing this damage: needless to say, it was unserviceable for the trip. Hey, what's that on the horizon?
Macquarie Island station during changeover, Decemb…

Looking past the radio shack (yellow) and meteorology office area, with some of the many aerial masts. In those days Macquarie was not a Tasmanian National Park, so that's smoke from burning rubbish in the distance. No fires allowed now! The weather here is more typical than in most of my photos.

Taken during the annual changeover of expeditions. Looking across the main part of the station down the isthmus toward the main part of the island. In the foreground, the surgery is being extended, while in the distance on the left, a DUKW is unloading meteorological stores.

Southern Ocean storm

Copied from an old slide (and now brought forward in my photo stream). Heading south on the Nella Dan , a few days out from Australia we encountered a major storm system in the Southern Ocean. This was taken from the deck above the bridge. It was a matter of getting the shot, then diving behind the barrier as the spray passed overhead.
At the worst of the storm, we finished up hove-to, pointing due west into the hurricane force winds for several days.

Copied from an old slide. I mentioned in my previous shot about the thickening cloud. It foreshadowed an impressive storm shortly after we reached the Southern Ocean, lasting for about a week.

Copied from an old slide and posted (too small) long ago.
The good ship Nella Dan leaving the dock and heading down the Yarra River, December 1965, Melbourne. Next stop Antarctica. The cloud has continued to thicken since the earlier shots of the ship at the wharf preparing to depart.

Updated from my original posting and originally on F..r. I'd been copying some old slides. For many years, the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) used WWII amphibious army vehicles known as DUKWS as cargo lighters. Here one is being loaded on the Nella Dan.

Updated from my original posting and originally on F..r. I'd been copying some old slides. The Nella Dan was carrying a Beaver floatplane aircraft and a Bell 47 helicopter on this trip.

Updated from my original posting (and originally on F..r). I'd been copying some old slides. This is the Lauritzen Lines ship MV Nella Dan, on contract to the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) preparing to depart for Antarctica in late December 1965 with me on board.
HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
