Macro mandarine

08 Jul 2024 23 16 173
For Macro Mondays weekly project No 369: "Summer fruits". I hope I will be excused for showing this mandarine (also PiP) which is fresh in season here, as I imagine current seasonality is the intent of the theme (even though it's now winter here).

Christmas fruit

23 Dec 2022 27 20 234
One of the pleasures of Christmas in Australia is that all kinds of fruit have just ripened, such as the lovely fresh cherries in this little bowl. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, with or without the fruit. Among all the carols and other ditties about Rudolph and such on the radio , we no longer hear this item from the brilliant Tom Lehrer, the lyrics seeming more relevant now than ever.

Satin Bowerbird

29 Jun 2021 36 30 250
Satin Bowerbirds are native to eastern Australia. This is a female or young male - very different from the adult male (7 years +) which has a beautiful almost metallic blue/black colour. For those in other parts of the world, they are roughly the size of pigeons. They also are absolute dynamite at stripping fruit trees, as this one was doing in a neighbour's tree. Best viewed large, also see PiPs.

Wishing all my ipernity friends a very enjoyable festive season. In Australia, at Christmas we have a great range of fresh fruit, from watermelons and mangoes to stone fruit such as plums, apricots and cherries. I hope you'll also enjoy this Australian Xmas musical track.

Care to try a Lilly-pilly?

11 Feb 2019 35 26 655
These are the fruit of the Lilly-pilly tree, a native of eastern Australia. The actual size of these fruit is about 7-10mm and there are many such bunches on the tree (see note). A few months ago I showed the flowers. Although the fruit are edible I wouldn't suggest picking and trying one, they are mouth-puckeringly astringent. Cooked up with some sugar though, they make a very pleasant sauce. Explored.

23 Dec 2018 31 35 533
All my very best wishes for an enjoyable festive season to all my ipernity friends. In Australia, Christmas is when the fresh fruit is at its best. I hope you'll also enjoy this great Christmas track which (to my surprise) is 60 years old this year. Best viewed on black.
